I am 63 years of age, live in Ashburton and left school with no qualifications at the age of 15. I started work at the local hospital in the kitchen and worked my way into running the cafe, this is the kind of work I have been doing ever since.
Last year I was off work with a serious shoulder injury for seven months, seven months where I was going to go crazy if I couldn’t find something to stop my brain from turning to mush. Flicking through Facebook, this NZIBS Proofreading & Editing advert kept popping up: ‘was it a scam’? ‘would I stick to it for 12 months’? ‘what if it was too hard’? I decided to take the bull by the horns and give it a go.
It was fantastic! I enjoyed it so much, the research, thinking, having to have assignments in on time, waiting to get them back and seeing what my marks were and what my tutor had to say. I enjoyed every minute of it and was sad when it came to an end.
My tutor was amazing, always there when I needed him, he gave me credit where it was due and also told me halfway through the course (it must have been a couple of assignments that didn’t interest me much) that basically if I didn’t pull my finger out I would fail!!!! Thank you so much, just what I needed to hear and thanks to those words I passed with merit.
Now I am working on starting my own business and making a success of it. I always believe that you are never too old to change the course of your life, age is just a number.
