With an illustrious career spanning nearly six decades, Phil brings an extraordinary depth of experience to the role. His contributions to sports journalism and broadcasting have shaped the industry in New Zealand, making him an incredible mentor for aspiring sports writers.
Recognised for Excellence: Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports journalism and broadcasting, Phil was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the 2024 New Year Honours list. This prestigious honour acknowledges his dedication to the industry and the significant impact he has made in shaping New Zealand’s sports media landscape.
A Storied Career in Sports Journalism
Phil Gifford’s journey in journalism began in 1965 as a reporter for the New Zealand Herald. He later worked for the Auckland Star, covering major news stories before finding his true passion—sports journalism. In 1973, he introduced the now-iconic rugby character “Loosehead Len”, a column that ran for 36 years and became a beloved part of New Zealand’s rugby culture.
Phil has been recognized multiple times for his work, including being named New Zealand Sports Writer of the Year twice and New Zealand Sports Columnist of the Year three times. He has covered major global sporting events, including the 1968 Olympic Games, four Commonwealth Games, and every Rugby World Cup since 1987. His deep knowledge and firsthand experience in sports reporting make him an invaluable asset to our course.
Broadcasting and Beyond
Phil’s influence extends beyond print journalism. From 1980 to 2021, he was a familiar voice on New Zealand radio, co-hosting popular shows on Radio Hauraki, 91 ZM, More FM, Radio Sport, and Newstalk ZB. His engaging storytelling and insightful analysis earned him 14 New Zealand radio awards and two Australasian awards for Best Sports Broadcaster. In 2021, he was further honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Radio.
A Prolific Author and Mentor
In addition to his work in journalism and broadcasting, Phil is a celebrated author, having written 26 books. His notable works include biographies of Dame Valerie Adams and Sir Wayne Smith, capturing the journeys of some of New Zealand’s most respected athletes. His most recent book, “Smithy” (2023), tells the story of legendary All Blacks and Black Ferns coach Sir Wayne Smith. His ability to tell compelling stories with depth and authenticity will be a great inspiration to students learning the craft of sports journalism.
